VIDEO: Disability Rights Maryland
Disability Rights Maryland provides an array of services to state residents with disability that focuses on upholding their legal rights, promoting self-advocacy and peer-support, and change policies that will empower and not hinder the independence and inclusion of disabled people. Some of the assistance provided includes access to housing, mental health care, special education, transportation, freedom from abuse and neglect, and discrimination.
Rooted in Rights worked with Disability Rights Maryland to explain the vast services and supports it provide to its residents. Four clients of Disability Rights Maryland shares the various ways the organization assisted them with their needs – a student being retained in school and obtaining IEP services; accessing accessible housing with a voucher; creating effective and fair paratransit services protocol; and securing Medicaid waivers for community-based services. DRMD fulfills its mission to protect the rights of disabled people, and to promote the importance of self-advocacy and peer-support to ensure that self-determination and ability to be included are realities.
