The games promote rehabilitation through competition for the veterans who use wheelchairs due to spinal cord injuries, amputations and neurological diseases. They include 17 events such as, basketball, soccer, rugby, softball, swimming, archery, weightlifting, track and hand-cycling to name a few. The athletes compete in brackets with other athletes that are similar in abilities, experience and age.

The NVWG began in 1981, when 74 veterans came together to compete in a plethora of sporting events. With the addition of six hundred more competitors, this event promises excitement and also an opportunity for newly disabled veterans to gain new skills and camaraderie. Youth with disabilities can participate on Kids Day at the Games, June 27th, where they are encouraged to meet with the athletes and learn more about adaptive sports.

The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs and Paralyzed Veterans of America and made possible by their sponsors. Please visit the United States Department of Veteran Affairs website for more information.
