The documentary Monica & David, which tells the story of the marriage of two people with Down Syndrome, is a nominee for an Emmy Award.

The film, directed by Monica’s cousin, explores the romantic tale of how Monica and David and the family that strives to support their needs, according to the film’s website. It also details the challenges of living with the widely misunderstood disability and the complexities of living in a society with such low expectations for them.

Until recently, people with Down Syndrome led short, isolated lives. In 1983, the  average life expectancy for someone with Down Syndrome was 25. Today, it is 60.

Monica & David, which premiered on HBO last fall, won best documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival last year. The Emmy awards will be held September 26.
