About the Event

Are you working in media? Creating video content, sharing information on social media, writing, directing, acting, producing? Do you identify as disabled? Do you want to connect with a community of disabled media makers? Rooted in Rights invites you to join us on Friday, June 25 and Saturday, June 26 from 1:30-5:00pm ET/10:30am to 2:00pm PT for a free virtual conversation for disabled media makers.

Although a lack of representation and misrepresentation of disability in the media remain all too common, disabled people are continually shifting the paradigm. The ongoing global injustices of the past year have further exposed the gaps in media’s disability coverage. We want to recognize the tireless efforts of disabled media makers not only to close these gaps, but to center stories of the disability community.

We’re making a space for us all to connect because it’s not happening enough. We want to support a stronger sense of community, so let’s gather to discuss our individual and collective work and to explore the paths ahead.

Following the event, we will be creating a public-facing document highlighting main points of discussion and lessons learned.

Topics

On both days, we’ll host a series of lively facilitated dialogues among small groups focusing on four key areas:

  • Media Accessibility
  • Disability in 2020: COVID-19, Black Lives Matter, and more
  • Media Representation: Current Trends
  • Media Representation: The Future
